PROBLEM: From time to time, I feel like I’m a bit stuck. Stuck in my job, stuck in my daily activities, stuck in my outlook.
SOLUTION: I need to get unstuck.
I just listened to an EXCELLENT episode of the NPR podcast, Hidden Brain, and I have to share it!
It is entitled “Getting Unstuck,” and is about how to change your way of thinking in order to change your life. While I don’t feel the need to make a life overhaul, it did make me stop to think about my identity and how I see myself.

It made me think so much about where I am in my life right now, specifically in trying to navigate my identity as a working mom. I began my career when I was 22 – 6 years before getting married, and 7 years before having my first child. While I always dreamt of being a mom and marrying the love of my life, those dreams didn’t actually come to fruition until later in my 20’s, so a career came first (a girl’s gotta eat!) [Please don’t let the previous statement cause you to stop reading this blog – I’m a card-carrying feminist, and I have also always wanted to be a wife a mom!]
I am lucky enough to have found a career that I love and am passionate about, and for years that is how I defined myself – when people asked me what I did, I didn’t say that I “taught.” I said “I am a teacher.” Now, when people ask, my initial response is still the same, but something inside of me wants to scream “I’M A MOMMY AND A WIFE! And I’m also a passionate and devoted teacher. And I also write a blog, love crafting and sewing, have an addiction to projects around my house, drink enough coffee to fuel a small factory…” Perhaps I should work to find a more tactful way of stating that…
Special thanks to my mom for suggesting this podcast!
